Reducing Start-up Friction For Realtime VFX Projects

Unity employs a modular package-based approach to extending a project’s capabilities.

Last night, I consolidated the installation process for multiple packages required when using Unity for and media creation.

My custom script registers a new Editor menu item enabling a 1-click install workflow for multiple packages.

Installed Packages include:

  • USD Exporter
  • Streaming Image Sequences
  • Cinemachine
  • Pro builder

I’ve placed my custom monobehavior C# script within a custom “.unitypackage” which contains a variety of necessary virtual production tools.

I’ve condensed the time, once required, to drag and drop multiple tools, packages, and Editor customizations into two actions: one drag-and-drop followed by a single click.

I’m feeling good about this frictionless approach as a very quick method for spinning up new projects quickly.
